The discovery of a stool.

Well, While I was digging in the bowels of my basement again, (pardon the pun), I came across a stool I had found at the curb side many, many, years ago. I finally decided to do something with it. I am very happy with the results.

Below is the before shot, cobwebs and all.

I sanded the surface with very fine grit sandpaper as to not damage the wood.

Through ICI PAINTS and SHERWIN WILLIAMS seminars, I have learnt, a well  prepared surface and good quality primer is the foundation to a long lasting and durable surface.

The high quality primer I use is ZINSSER for all surfaces. It is expensive but highly recommended.

Upholstering is next. My first attempt. I started small. Learnt a few things along the way. A 2"  foam was used, a little too thick for this project. Try not to use anything thicker than 1" for small surfaces.  It will make the job easier, especially on the corners and make sure to trim those corners. I have seen this done soooo many times, but it is not as easy as they make it look.  A manual staple gun with 5/16 " staples was sufficient for this small job.

A piece of material was added to the underside to hide the trim and give it a nice finished.

The upholstering turned out nice and plush.  Very happy with the results.

Used a fine grit sandpaper to reveal the original dark stain under the surface to give it a nice vintage chipy paint appearance.

It is very easy to get carried away with the sanding. I suggest you take frequent breaks.  Step back and have a look at the entire piece before you go too far.

If not the results can be too systematic and fake looking.

All the dents and scratches make the paint surface look authentically vintage.

Et Voila,

The discovery of a stool from the bowels of my basement. (Sorry, just had to say it!)

My words to inspire for the day!

Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
