Thrifting in NYC for a studio apartment.

I was recently in New York City visiting my daughter.  A year ago as a young professional coming from Montreal, Canada my daughter left home with a suitcase, her stereo and a few precious nic nacs. She was unsure what the future held for her. Today she is quite certain of one thing.
She will be in New York City for awhile, she just loves it. This means she is seeking more permanence. She needs furniture........she wants vintage, I can do that, I love thrifting. The thrill of the hunt. NYC here I come.
We had a blast thrifting through the city  seeking large pieces of furniture for her studio apartment.
These pieces have potential but not quite what we were looking for.
My first stop, I was told not to take pictures...disappointed. (who doesn't want free net exposure???). OK on to the next.
Remember these? Very vintage (settle down class).
I think my Mom still has something like this in her home somewhere!
This would look really awesome in a home office.
Pssst....for the most part, I could get most of this stuff for a fraction of what they are charging at yard and garage sales.
I found most of the stuff overpriced, but yet again it is NYC.
Found this... woooohhoooooowhooo hoooooooOoooooo....insert name (see below) wooohoooaooowoohoooOaooo. (My kids will get this!)
My children advised me, this DJ was not referring to THE Barbra Streisand in his song???? Who knew?

A vintage window display.
I have one of these babies in my basement (a Norge). We turn it on only during get-togethers. Very expensive on electricity to keep running.
My vintage Norge was left from the original homeowners (from 1960-1972) and the front is mod podged in labels. This is before mod podge became popular. My basement bar is another post that I will save for another day. Please have a second look at what is going on in the window display with these mice. Too funny.

A sneak peek....one of our finds. We did very well and I just had to bring back home a few things as well.
(I sure missed My Big Bertha in NYC).

I will reveal in my next post, our great finds and the makings of a quaint studio apartment in Manhattan, NY.

We are still new at thrifting in NYC. Any advice from a native New Yorker? We would love to hear from you.

  3. That looked like a fun day with your daughter. Funny you are so right about pricing. It is hard when you know what you should pay, but, of course NYC is going to be three or more times higher. Have fun! And congrats to your daughter for following her dreams. Thanks for sharing with my newbie party.

  9. Hey, I'm back to answer your question on my faux painted carriage house garage doors that you made a comment to. Yes, hubby was glad that I save him lots of money, but I always do and he always is.
